Publishable summary
The 2TaLL project examined possibilities and limitations of using virtual models of cities (3D) to provide advanced urban analyses focused on simulations on impact of tall buildings on landscapes of European cities. The research problem undertook in the project is actual and important for contemporary urban planning. In the past two decades tall buildings have become increasingly popular on the European continent. It causes rapid changes of landscapes of many cities and poses a threat for urban heritage. Therefore, there is a need for new simulation techniques useful in planning process that in an objective and comprehensive manner will help to determinate the spatial consequences of tall buildings development.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
► preliminary identification of tall buildings phenomena in European cities;
► examination of the application feasibility of 3D models to tall buildings analysis,
► preparing of simulation techniques of various aspects of tall buildings in build-up environment,
► definition of guidelines for urban analysis systems for tall buildings,
► evaluation of application ability of new methodologies in urban planning.
RESEARCH AREAS:
► fieldwork studies of tall buildings impact on cityscapes realized for selected European cities (Vienna, Milano, Paris, Frankfurt, Koln, Brussel, Amsterdam, Munich, Nuremberg, Wroclaw, Dresden, Warsaw, and London);
► mastering of processing and adjustment urban analysis of different types of 3D city models (CityGML, LiDAR / DSM);
► development of methods of tall buildings impact analysis and suitable software solution for its application in planning.
ACHIEVED RESULTS:
► Visual Impact Size (VIS) method – allowing measurement of tall buildings impact on cityscape including city panoramas and urban structure;
► Visual Protection Surface (VPS) method – allowing to compute maximal height of buildings within the city area taking into account full protection of determined strategic views;
► 3D-Negative and other computational methods allowing measurement of tall buildings impact on public spaces including analysis of shadowing and visual perception;
► preparing of porotype software solutions (C++) enabling application of developed methods;
► delivery of pioneering case studies which introduced VIS and VPS methods in urban planning.
During the project, in total 31 activities took place promoting exchange of knowledge in 20 European cities, including studies, conferences, presentations, exhibitions, etc. Rresults was disseminated by: 13 peer-reviewed papers or articles, presentations on mainstream conferences, guest lectures given in scientific institution, local authorities project exhibition. Project caused a significant acquisition of knowledge and competences of PI. Achieved results are an important contribution into her post-doctoral thesis.
